About this printable

Sight words are the words a child has to recognise instantly because sounding them out either fails or takes too long: said, come, one, was, they. This set covers all 220 Dolch words, split into the five standard lists from pre-primer through grade three, so a teacher can hand out exactly the list a child is on rather than the whole pile at once. Reading recovery groups, kindergarten classes and parents doing five minutes at bedtime all use the same order.

Every word gets a card in a clean primary font with no picture, because a picture lets a child guess instead of read. Colour coded borders mark which list a card belongs to, so a mixed pile can be sorted back in seconds. Alongside the cards come word ring labels, a flash and check strip for timed practice, sentence cards using the words in context, a bingo set for group work, and printable checklists for both the teacher record and the fridge at home.

Plain paper is fine for worksheets; use 160-300 gsm card for anything you plan to cut out, and laminate or slide pages into a wallet when they need to survive a dry-wipe pen.

What order should I teach the letters in?

Many teachers start with s, a, t, i, p, n because those letters make the most simple words early. Our letter-of-the-week packs follow that order, but you can use them in any sequence.

Are these UK or US phonics?

The packs use letter sounds that work for both. Where spelling differs we note it in the product description.

Do flashcards need special paper?

No. Regular paper works. For cards that last, print on 160-300 gsm card or laminate them.
