About this printable

Letter names and letter sounds are two different things, and a child who only knows names will sound out cee ay tee and hear nothing. These letter sound flashcards teach the sound first. Each card shows one letter, one keyword picture, the pure sound written the way it is actually said, and a short mouth cue telling a child what lips and tongue should do. That last line is what parents most often need, because saying b rather than buh is harder than it looks.

The pack runs to 78 cards. Twenty six cover the single letter sounds, sixteen cover the common digraphs and trigraphs including sh, ch, th, ng, ai, ee and igh, and the rest cover alternative spellings such as c and k, and the soft g. Reverse sides carry the sound alone for a quick recall drill. Two board style games, a sound wall header set and a home practice ring add ways to use the same cards more than once.

Cards print four to a page on A4 or US Letter with dashed cut lines, about 3.5 by 4 inches each, and the sound-only backs line up for double-sided printing. Personal and single classroom use is licensed; resale is not permitted.

Plain paper is fine for worksheets; use 160-300 gsm card for anything you plan to cut out, and laminate or slide pages into a wallet when they need to survive a dry-wipe pen.

What order should I teach the letters in?

Many teachers start with s, a, t, i, p, n because those letters make the most simple words early. Our letter-of-the-week packs follow that order, but you can use them in any sequence.

Are these UK or US phonics?

The packs use letter sounds that work for both. Where spelling differs we note it in the product description.

Do flashcards need special paper?

No. Regular paper works. For cards that last, print on 160-300 gsm card or laminate them.
