About this download

Six website page layouts - home, about, services, contact, shop and a single product page - drawn as wireframes with prompts written into every block saying what belongs there and why. They are SVG files, so the prompts are real text you can retype.

A wireframe is a plan of a page: what goes where, in what order, and what the reader does next. It is deliberately grey and plain, because the moment a plan has colours and photographs in it, everyone argues about the colours instead of the order.

The ten page PDF guide is mostly about the words, because nearly every small business website problem is a words problem wearing a design costume. It covers the eight words at the top of a home page, with a good and a bad example written out; why the about page needs a photograph of a person and a line about what you will not do; publishing prices; what actually belongs on a product page; saying when you reply on the contact page; and a pre-launch list worth doing.

Print the six pages, fill them in by hand, then open a website builder and build what is on the paper. That order saves the fortnight most people lose choosing a theme before deciding what the site should say. Print at 100% or "actual size" rather than "fit to page", otherwise the margins shift and the pages stop lining up. Digital are both included, so pick whichever your printer is loaded with. Plain paper is fine for worksheets; use 160-300 gsm card for anything you plan to cut out, and laminate or slide pages into a wallet when they need to survive a dry-wipe pen.

What the licence allows

Your purchase covers personal use and use in a single classroom by one teacher. Print as many copies as you need for your own family or class.
