About this printable

Most shape packs stop at the circle, square and triangle and leave a child unable to name a pentagon or tell a cube from a square. These shape recognition worksheets cover twelve flat shapes and six solid shapes properly, and they keep the two apart, because calling a cube a square is the single most common shape error in early years.

The twelve flat shapes run from circle, square, triangle and rectangle through to oval, diamond, pentagon, hexagon, octagon, star, heart and crescent. The six solids are cube, sphere, cone, cylinder, pyramid and cuboid. Each shape gets its own naming page with its sides and corners (or faces and edges) marked, and turns up again on matching, sorting and real world pages that pair shapes with everyday objects such as a clock, a tent, a tin and a dice. Sorting pages ask a child to group by number of sides rather than by look, which is what actually builds the concept. Two pages compare a flat shape with its solid partner side by side, and a properties chart lists sides, corners and faces for reference.
