About this printable

This emotions flashcards set builds feeling vocabulary one word at a time, which is the piece most social emotional learning starts with. Forty eight cards move from the basic feelings a three year old already knows, out to the harder ones a seven year old needs: frustrated, disappointed, embarrassed, nervous, proud, jealous, lonely and relieved. A four colour zones chart lets children sort any feeling into a group before naming it exactly.

Each card shows one clear face illustration, the feeling word in a primary teaching font, and a matching body clue on the reverse such as tight fists or a fast heartbeat. Pairs are supplied for a memory game, and a set of word only cards lets older children match word to face. The zones chart comes as a wall poster, a desk strip and a small clip chart, so a child can move a peg rather than speak when speaking is the hard part. Ten discussion prompt cards give an adult something to ask that is not just how do you feel.

Print on A4 or US Letter at four cards per page. Personal and single classroom use is licensed; the files may not be resold or redistributed.

Plain paper is fine for worksheets; use 160-300 gsm card for anything you plan to cut out, and laminate or slide pages into a wallet when they need to survive a dry-wipe pen.

What is a calm-down card?

A small card showing one self-regulation strategy - deep breaths, counting, squeezing hands. The child picks a card instead of having to think of a strategy while upset.

Do the STEM cards need special equipment?

No. Every experiment uses common household items, listed on the card itself.

Are these suitable for children with additional needs?
